The Philippines consists of more than 7,000 islands of varying sizes. This geographic characteristic directly results in extremely high costs for the country’s power transmission and distribution networks, especially since many islands are located in remote areas. As a result, it is often impractical for local governments to install traditional grid-connected streetlights along roads. Even in areas where streetlights have been installed, unstable power infrastructure and high electricity costs mean that many lights fail to operate properly at night.
Since 2016, the Philippine Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has been planning the installation of solar streetlights across cities nationwide. However, during those early years, many DPWH projects involved installing 6-meter-high, 30-watt or 40-watt solar streetlights on roads that were 20 meters or even 30 meters wide. The excessive width of these roads meant that the solar lights could not adequately illuminate the central roadway. Moreover, after several years of operation, most of the initially installed lights have either completely failed or suffered significant brightness degradation.
Over the past two years, the DPWH has introduced new requirements for solar streetlight projects. This particular project involved the installation of 1,608 sets of 12m 150w integrated solar street lights along Davao’s main thoroughfares. After detailed discussions with local Philippine contractors, we submitted a comprehensive and professional proposal to the government department. Combined with our client’s strong collaborative relationship with the government, we successfully secured and completed the installation of this project.
Following the installation of the 1,608 units, local government councilors conducted nighttime inspections. They were deeply impressed and inquired with our client about the exceptional brightness of the lights. The councilors unanimously declared this to be the finest solar streetlight installation project in the entire Davao region.
